Boat oxidation removal reverses the chalky, faded layer that UV exposure creates on gelcoat. We use staged compounding and polishing to cut through it safely, then seal the restored surface with wax, sealant, or ceramic coating so the color and gloss actually hold.

Oxidation is what happens when sunlight slowly burns the surface of your gelcoat. The UV breaks down the resin, leaving a dull, porous, chalky layer that washes out the color and rubs off as a faint powder on your fingers. It is the single most common reason a hull looks old, and on the open exposure of Lake Michigan it sets in fast on any boat that has gone a season or two without protection.
The good news: oxidation lives in a thin surface layer. Removing it does not mean refinishing the boat. It means cutting away that degraded film to reach the sound, bright gelcoat underneath. That is exactly what our oxidation removal process does.
We start with the most aggressive step the finish actually needs and work down to the finest. Heavy oxidation begins with a cutting compound on a rotary or dual-action polisher to remove the chalk. We then refine with a polish to clear the haze the compound leaves and bring the gloss up. Light oxidation may skip straight to the polishing stage. Throughout, we remove only as much material as necessary.
Freshly corrected gelcoat is bare and will re-oxidize quickly if left unprotected. We finish every oxidation job with wax, sealant or a ceramic coating so the restoration holds. Without that final step, the chalk comes back within a season.
Severe, long-neglected oxidation sometimes thins the gelcoat to the point where heavy correction is risky. In those cases we are honest about it and may recommend gelcoat restoration or, in extreme cases, refinishing instead of chasing gloss that is not there. Few services transform a boat as visibly as oxidation removal. A hull that looked tired, flat and a decade old can come back to deep, reflective color in a single visit, often surprising owners who assumed the finish was simply worn out. The color was there the whole time, buried under that thin chalky layer, correction just uncovers it again.
Because the change is so dramatic, oxidation removal is also one of the highest-value services before a sale. A bright, glossy hull reads as a well-kept boat and commands attention at the dock, while a chalky one quietly knocks money off the asking price no matter how sound the vessel is mechanically.
