No, not for most of the work. We wash, wax, and detail topsides at your slip throughout Cook County and the Chicago harbors. Machine-buffing the full side hull to a true polish does require the boat to be out of the water, the same as bottom-paint work below the waterline.
A wash removes loose dirt and salt film. Detailing decontaminates the gelcoat, corrects oxidation and swirl with machine polishing, and adds long-term protection. We also spend more time on the smaller details of the cleaning process, cupholders, hardware, and seams included, not just the obvious surfaces.
It depends on length and condition. A clean 24-foot bowrider may take a few hours, while a heavily oxidized 35-foot cruiser needing multi-stage correction can run a full day or more. We give you a clear time estimate with your quote.

We prefer dock power and a water spigot when available, which most harbors provide. We carry our own water supply as a backup, and if your dock doesn't have power, just let us know ahead of time so we can plan the visit around it.
UV exposure breaks down the resin at the surface of the gelcoat, creating a dull, chalky layer. Lack of wax or sealant accelerates it, which is why protection matters so much on the lakefront.
Protect the corrected finish with wax, sealant or a ceramic coating, and keep up regular washing. Unprotected gelcoat re-oxidizes within a season on Lake Michigan.
It's more durable and slicker, lasting a year or more versus a couple of months for wax, but it costs more up front. "Better" depends on how long you keep the boat and how much upkeep you want.
Yes, for its lifespan. While the coating is active you don't wax over it; you just wash normally. Wax-coated boats need re-waxing every couple of months.
Yes. We sand the weathered gray layer down to bare wood, then follow with a clean-and-brighten process to bring back the warm honey color, as long as the wood itself is still sound.

It varies widely by length, condition and the services needed. A light maintenance detail on a small, well-kept boat is modest; full restoration on a large, neglected hull costs much more. Quotes are built per boat.
Share your boat's make, length and finish condition, the services you want, and where it's kept, ideally with photos. That lets a detailer give a real number rather than a vague range.
Every week or two through the season. Frequent washing lifts mineral spotting, pollen and grime before it embeds and preserves the wax or coating underneath.
Generally yes. Less UV and weather exposure slows oxidation and spotting, so covered and garaged boats can stretch their intervals compared to open-slipped boats.
